    Google Maps Timeline updates your location in real time as you move. It uses a combination of your phone’s GPS signal, as well as information from nearby cell towers and Wi-Fi networks and works for years back in time, since first you logged into Google on your phone and had location services turned on.

    Google Maps Timeline is a personal map that helps you remember routes and trips that you’ve taken and places that you’ve been to based on your Location History. You can edit your Timeline at any time and delete your Location History in Timeline.

     

    You need to turn on your Location Services and Location History, or has been turned on already. The Location History Tool is a Google Account setting that automatically record’s your location throughout the day (and night) and creates Timeline, a personal map that helps you remember routes and trips that you’ve taken and places that you’ve been to.

     

    How often does it update and save my location?
    The device itself, does the ‘pinging’. It does the data collection, and submits the information to Google. But it’s not a fixed interval. At time activity and also less if the GPS receiver is being kept awake by other programs. It logs more, when other actions on your phone are less.

     

    But also ‘collect’ more points, but only submit to the server in batches. It might of continued collecting points for a long time, but never got round to submitting them.

    You can turn your Location History on or off in the Google Maps app on your Android phone or tablet. To do this, you can:

    Open the Google Maps app
    Tap your profile picture or initial
    Tap Your Timeline
    Tap More
    Tap Settings and privacy
    Tap Location History is off or Location History is on
    Turn Location History on or off

     

    You can also choose to keep your location data until you manually delete it or have Google auto-delete it after 3, 18, or 36 months.
